Absolutely love this Pilates studio! It’s such a beautiful space and everyone is so lovely and welcoming. I genuinely look forward to my class every week. Alex is fantastic, she brings amazing energy to every session, challenges you in all the best ways, and is incredibly knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
I used to think Pilates was just "fancy stretching," but this men’s only reformer class has completely changed my perspective. It is, quite simply, some of the hardest work I’ve put my body through in 20 years. The environment is fantastic. Being in a room with other guys creates a focused, and less intimidating atmosphere where for someone like myself who has just hit 50 this is great. A massive shout-out goes to Chloe our teacher. They are top-tier—incredibly knowledgeable, has great patience and is gifted at explaining the technical side of the movements. You can tell they genuinely care about our progress, pushing us right to the edge of our comfort zone and beyond. Even after only a few weeks, the benefits are showing. My core feels significantly stronger, my flexibility has improved and I feel better about myself. If you’re a guy on the fence about trying this, stop overthinking it and sign up. It’s a total game-changer and a really great way to spend 50 minutes.
Riverside Reformer offers 2 pilates disciplines. Each one is suited to different goals — read the breakdown below to see which fits.
Reformer pilates is performed on a specialised piece of equipment using adjustable spring resistance. It targets deeper stabilising muscles than mat-based pilates and is widely used for posture correction, core strength, injury rehabilitation and pre/postnatal training.
Mat pilates uses your bodyweight on a padded mat, often with small props like resistance bands, blocks and pilates balls. It's the most accessible form of pilates — no heavy equipment, lower price points, and easier to continue at home.

Honest, specific answers about this studio.
2 of 3 recent reviews mention the instructors in positive terms — words such as "knowledgeable", "attentive" and "encouraging" recur most frequently. Members citing specific cues, form corrections or named instructors is a strong sign of relationship-led teaching rather than transactional class delivery. If instructor depth matters for your decision (particularly for clinical or prenatal-focused pilates), this is a useful positive signal. One recent member put it this way: "Alex is fantastic, she brings amazing energy to every session, challenges you in all the best ways, and is incredibly knowledgeable." — Emma Pegler.
every recent review mention atmosphere in less positive terms — "cold", "intimidating" or "cliquey" being the recurring descriptors. This is worth weighting if you're a complete beginner and prone to feeling out of place; consider booking a quieter midweek 10-12am class rather than a peak 6pm session for your first visit, which is the standard pattern that smooths out the experience.
Yes — at least one weekday class runs until 20:00 or later, which suits members training after a standard working day. Evening peaks at most UK pilates studios run from 18:00 to 19:30, with later 20:00-21:00 slots usually quieter and easier to book on the day.
Most UK boutique reformers start newcomers with a beginner-tagged class or a 1-1 intro session rather than dropping them into a mixed-level group. Arrive 10-15 minutes early; you'll be shown carriage adjustment, spring tension and basic safety. Wear grip socks (mandatory at most studios — they sell pairs for £8-15 if you don't have them) and form-fitting clothing that lets the instructor see your alignment. The first class is the steepest learning curve — by your third session, the equipment feels much more intuitive.
