Such a wonderful studio! I was new to reformer but with such a welcoming atmosphere, small community feel and amazing teaching I have fallen in love with it. Tash Lock is such a phenomenal teacher and her reformer control and burn classes on Fridays are excellent. Great fun, lots of laughter, good music and individual support and guidance. I’ve grown so much in confidence with my Pilates and my classes have become real anchor points in my weekly routine. Thank you to all at the Pilates Movement!
I have been going to The Pilates Movement for over 6 months. I originally went just for a trial as I had heard so much about Reformer Pilates. I am not very flexible and not normally a pilates or yoga fan ( I prefer running and the gym) - but I am now hooked on Reformer Pilates, thanks to The Pilates Movement. I've tried classes with a range of instructors and they are all great. Definitely recommend. I can feel the difference in terms of my posture and flexibility.
THE PILATES MOVEMENT - Guildford offers 2 pilates disciplines. Each one is suited to different goals — read the breakdown below to see which fits.
Reformer pilates is performed on a specialised piece of equipment using adjustable spring resistance. It targets deeper stabilising muscles than mat-based pilates and is widely used for posture correction, core strength, injury rehabilitation and pre/postnatal training.
Mat pilates uses your bodyweight on a padded mat, often with small props like resistance bands, blocks and pilates balls. It's the most accessible form of pilates — no heavy equipment, lower price points, and easier to continue at home.

Honest, specific answers about this studio.
one of the 3 recent reviews mention the instructors in positive terms — words such as "knowledgeable", "attentive" and "encouraging" recur most frequently. Members citing specific cues, form corrections or named instructors is a strong sign of relationship-led teaching rather than transactional class delivery. If instructor depth matters for your decision (particularly for clinical or prenatal-focused pilates), this is a useful positive signal. One recent member put it this way: "The Pilates instructor is very knowledgeable, professional and very helpful." — Dyan Focke.
Yes — at least one weekday class runs until 20:00 or later, which suits members training after a standard working day. Evening peaks at most UK pilates studios run from 18:00 to 19:30, with later 20:00-21:00 slots usually quieter and easier to book on the day.
Most UK boutique reformers start newcomers with a beginner-tagged class or a 1-1 intro session rather than dropping them into a mixed-level group. Arrive 10-15 minutes early; you'll be shown carriage adjustment, spring tension and basic safety. Wear grip socks (mandatory at most studios — they sell pairs for £8-15 if you don't have them) and form-fitting clothing that lets the instructor see your alignment. The first class is the steepest learning curve — by your third session, the equipment feels much more intuitive.
